From Typo to Inspiration
Hey everyone,
Today, while working on a project, I made a typo. It was one of those annoying mistakes that required me to dump a whole database because it just wasn't worth the effort to fix, it is a dev environment after all. But as I stared at it, the typo sparked a bit of creative inspiration for roleplaying just because it sounded cool.
The typo was "Emerad" instead of "Emerald."
Two things immediately came to mind. First, "Emirates," like the UAE, which evokes images of desert wealth and powerful leaders. Second, the "Eremites" from Genshin Impact, a name derived from the Greek word for "of the desert."
Both of these point to the desert. So, from that simple mistake, I'm introducing a new faction for you to use in your fantasy campaigns: a powerful group of wandering nomads from the great deserts.
The Emerad Conclave
The Emerad Conclave is a powerful confederation of nomadic clans who call the vast, unforgiving deserts their home. To outsiders, they may seem like simple wanderers, but in reality, they are the undisputed masters of the sands. They control the secret trade routes, guard the few hidden oases, and possess ancient knowledge of the desert that settled folk can only dream of. The name "Emerad" is a title of respect in their own tongue, meaning "the Unbowed" or "People of the Oasis."
Culture and Appearance
Members of the Conclave are recognizable by their fine, flowing silks in shades of deep green and burnished gold, colors that mimic the precious gems and the endless sands of their homeland. Their gear is practical for desert survival but is often masterfully crafted and adorned with intricate patterns.
Their culture is built on a foundation of fierce independence, unwavering honor, and a deep reverence for the wisdom of their clan leaders, the Emirs[^1]. They are expert astrologers, using the clear desert night skies not only for navigation but also for prophecy. Hospitality is a sacred duty to the Emerad, but they are unforgiving to those who betray their trust or threaten their people.
Goals and Motivations
The primary goal of the Emerad Conclave is to preserve their nomadic way of life against the encroaching empires of the "settled lands." They seek to control the trade of rare desert resources, like the scales of sand-drakes, the petals of the moon-lotus which only blooms by oasis water, and other mystical artifacts hidden beneath the dunes. They are not conquerors, but they will defend their territory and their freedom with deadly force.
Adventure Hooks
Here are a few ways to introduce the Emerad Conclave into your game:
- The Escort Mission: The players are hired to guide a valuable caravan through the desert. To ensure safe passage, they must negotiate with an Emerad clan. The Emir may demand a steep price in gold, or they may ask for a service in return, perhaps to hunt a monstrous beast that has been preying on their herds.
- The Dying Oasis: A sacred oasis, vital to the survival of several clans, has begun to dry up. The Emerad believe it is the work of outsiders and are offering a legendary reward to any who can venture into an ancient ruin at the oasis's heart and restore the flow of water.
- A Broken Alliance: One of the most powerful clans in the Conclave is threatening to break away and align with a foreign empire, which would shatter the balance of power in the desert. The players are hired by a loyalist Emir to act as neutral envoys, travel to the renegade clan's camp, and either uncover the truth of the conspiracy or persuade them to remain with their people.
I hope this little faction, born from a simple typo, sparks some ideas for your own campaigns. Feel free to use the Emerad Conclave as is, or twist them into something completely new for your world.
As always,
